A Foundation for Success
Elite Coaching & Leadership
Our commitment to excellence is driven by an elite coaching and high-performance structure. The program is led by Head Coach Ben Rutherford, with the quality of our coaching recently recognised when Cam Treloar was named the 2023 Shute Shield Coach of the Year. He is supported by Club Coach and club legend, Mark Gudmunson, who mentors our coaching staff and instills the unique culture of the Pirates throughout the entire club. Our players’ physical development is overseen by Head of Strength & Conditioning Shane McLeod, a former Wests player who brings a deep understanding of the club’s culture and physical demands. This professional environment is embodied on the field by our 1st Grade Captain, Romanian international Rob Irimescu, who leads a playing group committed to high standards.
The Pathway to Professional Rugby
West Harbour is defined by its role as a launchpad for professional careers. Our player pathway consistently produces talent for the highest levels of the game. This legacy is exemplified by West Harbour junior Allan Alaalatoa, who rose through our ranks to captain the Wallabies. The pathway’s current strength is demonstrated by current Wallaby player Carlos Tizzano, Western Force player Albert Alcock, and the selection of James O’Connor for the 2025 Wallabies squad for the British and Irish Lions tour. They follow in the footsteps of numerous professionals, such as ACT Brumbies player Jack Debreczeni, who have used West Harbour as a vital platform in their careers.
Investing in Our Future
This on-field success is underpinned by strategic and stable off-field governance. The club is guided by a professional Board comprising senior executives from leading national and global companies, including Findex, GHD, and Salesforce. This leadership ensures the club is managed with a clear, long-term vision, supported by the West Harbour Development Fund, which provides a structured vehicle for investment into our junior, colts, and senior programs.
Why West Harbour?
At West Harbour, we offer more than just a place to play rugby. We provide a professionally managed, high-performance environment where ambitious players are given the facilities, coaching, and opportunities to build successful careers.
